2017 is officially my third year as a fashion designer,The year I decided to commercialize my passion, I made a very precise plan, that after showcasing at a couple of fashion shows, I would become a celebrity fashion designer, that plan was just too hilarious but I believed in that plan.
I made two collections in my first year and I participated in a fashion show competition where different designers showcased their designs for the star price, that was my first attempt in fashion and I had a marvellous life changing experience.
So, you have a passion for fashion and you need to start up a fashion brand, you must be consistent, hardworking, prayerful and patient. Starting up a fashion business is not an easy task but if you have a great deal of passion for it, the difficulties you will face won’t discourage you.
So I will be giving valuable tips on starting a fashion brand, tips I used, tips I learnt, tips I failed to apply, general tips on starting a fashion brand.
1- Critical Research
Do a critical research on the aspect of fashion you want to specialise in. Be precise, for instance, you have a passion for womenswear, focus on that aspect.
2- Get a Mentor
A mentor is a wide and trusted counsellor; when picking a Mentor, pick someone that will have time to advice you.
3- Write a Business plan
In starting a business, a business plan is very essential. A business plan is a guide for your business, that outlines goals and details on how you intend to achieve those goals.
A business plan must contain the following; the executive summary, the company description, Market analysis, organisation and management, product or service line, marketing and sales… basically make your business plan detailed.
4- Capital
Work with the capital you have, don’t make a budget above your capital. I believe in starting small. Even in the Bible, it is stated “do not despise the days of humble beginnings” (Zechariah 4:10).
A fashion business is a high intensive business but if you have little you can start but make sure you deliver the best quality you can deliver, with time everything will fall in place. Be patient and believe with what you have you can start.
5- Be different
Fashion is a vast field, so be creative with every design. Fashion is art and a art is expression. Express yourself through your art, fashion
6- Make it Legal
Register your business name and your trademark. Make the business legal.
